The Medical College of Georgia is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 260 students per class. The educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provides about 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to more than 500 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Job Summary

A Standardized Patient (SP) Educator is an individual trained to participate in overseeing and training the work of standardized patients used in multiple educational programs in order to meet educational objectives and program requirements. This is a multi-incumbent position with duties including, but are not limited to recruiting, training, setting up events, assigning work, and performing quality assessment of the Standardized Patients. They will directly report to the Standardized Patient Program Director.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Provides the training of all standardized patients in all aspects of case portrayal, checklist item recognition, physical exam procedures, feedback training and communication. This includes human, hybrid, virtual, and mixed modality simulation.

Operates all technical resources to facilitate teaching and evaluation of medical students, nursing students and other health professions' students.

Serve as a backup Standardized Patient as needed.

Coordinates dissemination of activity material to SPs.

Assists Program Coordinator with the recruitment of Standardized Patients (SP) for scheduled activities.

Functions as part of team that runs OSCE and other simulation-related events.

Works closely with Educational Simulation directors, staff, SPs, students and faculty to plan and implement educational programs that use SPs, and to ensure that the SP Program meets the needs of all concerned. Prepares and updates materials for each standardized patient encounter, such as assignments, scenarios, checklist, handouts, evaluations, schedules and room assignments.

Monitors SP exercises for SP portrayal and documentation accuracy in student performance (quality assurance).

Assists faculty with case and script development.

Observes SPs performance and provides timely effective feedback to support performance goals.

Collects and analyses data for annual SP evaluations under the guidance of program director.

Recruits, auditions and assists in selecting Standardized Patients (SP) for employment and participates in new SP orientation.

Assists students, SPs and faculty in troubleshooting computer problems during activities including issues with Learning Space & Zoom.

Organizes rooms and equipment (task trainers and simulators) set up for learner activities.

Attends and participates in appropriate organizational workshops to keep current on educational theory and practice in the use of simulation and standardized patients in medical education (example - ASPE).

Develop and perform continuous quality improvement activities for the Standardized Patient Program including video review, checklist review and providing feedback to SPs.

Other duties and tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent from a recognized stated or federal accredited organization with at least five (5) years of relevant work experience as a standardized patient or relatable work in this field.

Preferred Experience

Experience working in healthcare education either as an SP trainer/educator or patient educator.

Professional simulation experience in an academic setting.

Special Simulation training or certification.

Experience in education, theater/performance, or healthcare.

Knowledge of quality assurance methods.

Public speaking/platform skills; experience giving presentations to groups.

Previous experience with simulation technologies, including high-fidelity mannequins and task trainers.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ABILITIES

Ability to train SPs as directed for their roles in various scheduled activities.

Ability to coordinate the logistics and scheduling SPs, rooms, faculty and students for all events.

KNOWLEDGE

Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to interact and communicate effectively with SPs, students, faculty and staff.

Must be able to provide constructive feedback and communicate articulately.

Must be able to observe learners' and standardized patients' behavior and performance for accurately evaluating their competencies.

Work requires basic medical terminology and a general understanding of basic physical examination.

Must be comfortable with a range of technologies (AV, computer, electronics, and medical equipment).

SKILLS

This position requires some lifting, walking, and standing for prolonged periods of time.

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
