Scientist II - Precision Cardiology

Bayer has an opening for a Scientist to join Bayer’s CVRI group based in Cambridge, MA. This is a highly collaborative cross-functional group with strong ties to the CVRI Research group in Germany, with a mission to identify and validate molecular targets for cardiovascular diseases. Our goal is to advance novel therapeutics to the clinic to benefit patients.

We are looking for a researcher with experience using hiPS cell technologies and/or primary cell cultures to join our In Vitro Cluster and take initiative in the design and execution of functional disease-modeling cellular assays. Specifically, the candidate will conduct experimental research studies at the bench, supervise research associates, and propose therapeutics project(s) targeting cardiovascular disease

Your Tasks And Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this Scientist II role are to:

  • Lead novel target proposals and experimental validation to support growth of our early cardiovascular portfolio and bring an understanding of the role of the immune system in cardiac homeostasis and disease;
  • Design and execute on functional cellular assays using human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and/or relevant primary or engineered cell lines;
  • Develop research plans for executing strategy, operate and maintain equipment, and perform laboratory work, with complete independence;
  • Contribute to maintenance of human induced pluripotent stem cell cultures (hiPSC) and differentiation of cells towards cardiomyocytes;
  • Engage in close collaboration with scientists and technical staff of the In Vitro Cluster based at the German sites to share knowledge, drive progress and stimulate innovation;
  • Prepare and update experimental protocols;
  • Independently perform data analysis and effectively interpret results;
  • Lead publication of results, prepare reports and presentations at both internal and external forums;
  • Coach research associates in a matrix organization;
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues and interdisciplinary teams both within Bayer and with external collaborators;
  • Assess external targets and programs to understand the competitive landscape and identify potential opportunities for collaboration or technological innovation.

Who You Are

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Biology (Cellular, Molecular or Developmental Biology), Biochemistry, or related life scientific field;
  • A background in cardiorenal disease biology;
  • Hands-on experience with CRISPR targeting ES/iPS cells and cardiomyocyte differentiation protocols;
  • Experience with primary cell culture of cardiac, vascular or immune origin is a plusExperience in cellular assay development and proficiency with standard assay formats in primary and cultured cells (e.g. flow cytometry, imaging, luminescence-/fluorescence-based cellular readouts, immunohistochemistry);
  • Expertise in standard molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology assays;
  • Track record of working on complex problems, and ability to integrate data from multiple disciplines;
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, and collaboration skills to work in a team-oriented, matrix environment, and the ability to work through conflicts;
  • Must demonstrate outstanding personal initiative, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team;
  • Ability to adapt to and effectively manage changes in a fast paced and dynamic environment ;
  • A passion for science and sense of urgency to find new medicines to benefit patients.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant post-doctoral research experience with a proven record of successful team leadership and interaction with collaborators (industrial setting is a plus);
  • Experience in conducting functional assays using cardiomyocytes (with contractility, metabolic or electrophysiology readouts).

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $108,724.80 - $163,087.20. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc.

This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
