After Hours is building a global community at the intersection of food, culture, and creative work. Post Shift: The After Hours Journal is our editorial platform featuring stories from chefs, bartenders, artists, and creative professionals pushing culture forward. We are expanding our contributor team and looking for journalists and storytellers who can help shape the next wave of narratives in food and hospitality.
This is a freelance/project-based role with opportunities for recurring work, creative ownership, and revenue participation.
Role: Freelance Journalist / Project Lead
Type: Freelance, Remote
Compensation: Base rate + sponsorship revenue share (details below)
We’re seeking writers who are:
Curious about food, culture, nightlife, design, and the people behind them
Strong storytellers with a clean, accessible voice
Comfortable interviewing chefs, makers, and creative professionals
Proactive, organized, and able to take a story from concept → interview → draft → delivery
Interested in contributing to a growing, design-forward publication
This role is ideal for early-career journalists, freelance writers, or creatives who want to build their portfolio while participating in a revenue-sharing editorial model.
Compensation Structure
Writers are paid through a combination of flat fees and sponsorship commissions:
Base Pay
$50 per article (standard editorial contribution)
Sponsorship Commission
Writers may earn additional pay based on sourced sponsorships connected to their article:
30% commission if After Hours sources the sponsorship
60% commission if the journalist sources the sponsorship
This structure allows contributors to earn meaningfully more for sponsored or co-branded editorial work. Sponsorships per article can range from $250-$2,500+.
Responsibilities
Pitching story ideas or taking assigned topics
Conducting interviews and primary research
Writing 400-2,500 word articles
Collaborating with the editorial lead on revisions
Optional: assisting with sourcing relevant sponsors (earning higher commission)
